Ralph E. Coolidge



Ralph Emerson "Bud" Coolidge, 73, died April 30, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way, WA. Bud struggled for 21 days in the ICU before he went to be with the Lord.

He was born on Nov. 15, 1943, in Springfield, VT. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1961 and attended Castleton State College. He left after one year when he joined the United States Army to volunteer for Viet Nam. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

He married Mary Jane Callahan on Nov. 27, 1965. After leaving the Army, Bud worked for the National Security Agency. The pull of family and of Vermont became too great and he returned home.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary Jane, and eight children, Betsy Curry (Tom), Steven Coolidge, Jennifer Rickey (Brad), Katherine Coolidge, Dawn Clarke (Gerry), Sabrina Coolidge, Julie Coolidge and Tina Estes. He is also survived by two sisters, Beatrice Degrasse and Sylvia Forbes, and one brother, Wayne Coolidge. They all reside in North Carolina. He will also be greatly missed by his 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph Coolidge Sr. and Madeline (Howard) Coolidge; one sister, Arlene Forbes; and two brothers, Donald and Wendall.

Family and friends will gather for a celebration of his life at the Andover Community Church on Saturday, May 13, at 11 a.m. A military burial will take place at 2 p.m. in the Andover Cemetery. -

Irma N. Weinzierl



Irma Nina Weinzierl, 72, of Rockingham, died Feb. 13, 2017, in Fort Myers, Florida.

She was born Aug. 30, 1944, in New York City, the daughter of Gelino and Sandra (Blier) Michelini. On Oct. 1, 1966, she married John J. Weinzierl, in East Hampton, Connecticut.

Mrs. Weinzierl was employed in human resources as a community outreach specialist with HCRS in Springfield for 30 years.

She volunteered with Meals on Wheels program and taught Sunday school.

She was an avid flower and vegetable gardener.

Survivors include her husband, of Rockingham; two children, David Weinzierl, of Bellows Falls, and Julie Strong, of Saxtons River; two brothers, James Michelini, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, and William Tarn, of Farmington, Connecticut; six grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at Athens Christian Community Church, with the Rev. Harold Noyes, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Meeting House Cemetery in Rockingham.

Kenneth J. Relihan



Kenneth J. Relihan 67, passed away on Saturday evening April 29, 2017 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center from complications of septic shock. He was born January 4, 1950 in Nashua, New Hampshire the son of Walter and Florence (Harmon) Relihan.

He attended schools in the Nashua area and graduated from Nashua High School class of 1968. He received his B.A. from the University of New Hampshire in 1972, and later his Masters from Brown University. He began his career in Nashua, worked at the Collegiate School in Richmond, VA., at the Westover School in Middlebury, Ct. , at Green Mountain Union High School in Chester, Vt. , and Monadnock Regional High School in Swanzey, N.H. He was a teacher as well as the Head of the Social Studies Department, and Debate Team Coach. His most recent position was as Curriculum Coordinator with the New Hampshire Department of Education in Social Studies, Foreign Language, and Gifted Education.

On May 30, 1981 He married Lenore Rourke in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Among his many gifts, he could take any moment in history and tell you its current relevance. History was never dead for him, and he made it live in his family and for hundreds of his students. Few outside the family will know that he was a lover, too, of children's literature. Reading aloud from The Wind and the Willows, The Hobbit, the Narnia books and so much more formed a basis for a rich family culture, and continued long after Terry Relihan and Ian Relihan grew up. We loved him dearly and will miss him forever.

He was also fond of fishing, and undeterred by his disability of recent years.

He enjoyed reading books and newspapers, fishing, bird watching and was an all around nature lover. He is survived by his wife Lenore of Springfield, two sons – Terence Relihan, of Manchester, N.H. and Ian Relihan of New York City. Mother and Father-in-law Janet and Bernard Rourke of Nashua, N.H., Brother-in-law David Rourke and his wife Susan of Nashua, N.H. and sister-in-law Susan Crandall, also of Nashua, N.H. He was predeceased by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday May 6, 2017 at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, Vt. Reverend William Sheldon will officiate.

Elizabeth F. Matulonis



Elizabeth F. "Betty" (Blanchard) Matulonis, 88, died Friday, April 28, 2017, surrounded by her family.

She was born Aug. 17, 1928, in Ludlow, the daughter of Lena Blanchard.

She attended Ludlow High School.

On Jan. 25, 1947, she married Herman J. Matulonis in South Reading.

They raised their children in Springfield, where Mrs. Matulonis spent most of her life as a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; four children, Donna Golec, of North Springfield, Debra Matulonis, of Wilder, David Matulonis, of Scarborough, Maine, and Daniel Matulonis, of Perkinsville; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by four brothers, Raymond, Casper, Carlos and Cecil Blanchard, and a great-grandson.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, in Oakland Cemetery in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Springfield Humane Society, 401 Skitchewaug Trail, Springfield, VT 05156. Arrangements are by Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Patricia A. Leining



Patricia Ann Leining, 47, passed away at her Springfield, Vt., home Sunday, April 23, 2017.

She was born Oct. 7, 1969.

Beloved daughter, mother, sister and friend, all who knew Trish can say that she was a caring and compassionate soul, quick with a smile and kind word for all. We can all hear her contagious laugh and see her sparkling blue eyes. Her free spirit led her on many adventures throughout her life. Forever in our hearts. Rest easy.

Maria Rabuano



Mrs. Maria Rabuano, 87, of Chester Rd., Springfield, VT, and of Bee St., Frankfort, N.Y., passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2017, in Springfield Health and Rehab.

She was born in Abbadia San Salvatore, Province of Benevento, Italy, on January 2, 1930, the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Carmella Pacelli, and she attended schools there. She was married to Biagio "Benny" Rabuano on August 12, 1956, in St. Mary's Church, San Salvatore Telesino, Italy. The family came to the United States in November of 1956, settling in Frankfort. Biagio passed away on February 14, 1992. Maria was a seamstress for Leslie Fay Dress Shop, Mohawk, for many years. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Apostles Church.

Maria is survived by two sisters, Antonietta and Lisa, and one brother, Tomaso, all of Italy, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter, Theresa Rabuano, on March 23, 2015.

Her funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM from the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave., Frankfort, and at 10:30 AM in Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Paul Catena. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday morning from 9:00 until the time of the services at the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc.

Maria's extended family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Springfield Health and Rehab, and especially Pat Lowden, for the wonderful care and kindness shown to her during her stay and passing. They would also like to extend a grateful thank you to Ray and Nancy LeBlanc for always being there for her.

Joseph M. Barrows



Joseph M. Barrows, 86, died April 18, 2017, in Venice, Florida.

He was born March 1, 1931, in Perkinsville, the son of Theodore and Gertrude (Warren) Barrows.

He graduated from Springfield High School.

Mr. Barrows served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He married Barbara Mandigo on Oct. 12, 1956. She predeceased him July 15, 1997.

He was a jeweler and watchmaker, owning and operating Barrows Watch and Repair in Guilford, Connecticut, for 35 years.

Mr. Barrows was an avid golfer and Yankees fan.

Survivors include his three children Mark Barrows, of Wallingford, Connecticut, Stephen Barrows, of Branford, Connecticut, and Lori Hart, of Madison, Connecticut; four grandchildren; and longtime companion, Bonnie Berkovich.

The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, where a calling hour will begin at 9 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Plain Cemetery in Perkinsville.

Richard A. Knight II



Richard Alan "Rick" Knight II, 34, died April 17, 2017, at his home in Chester.

He was born Oct. 8, 1982, in Claremont, New Hampshire, the son of Richard and Sandra "Sunny" Benson Knight.

He attended Springfield schools.

Mr. Knight had many jobs, including as a carpenter, at Ben & Jerry's, a Grafton cheesemaker, a chef, and most recently, was self-employed as a tree surgeon. He enjoyed snowboarding, motorcycle riding, skateboarding, scuba diving, playing in pool tournaments and was known as an aspiring chainsaw artist.

Survivors include his father and stepmother Carol Knight; his former wife, Kimberlee Adams, whom he married March 31, 2006, and their sons, Jacob and Joel; his stepson R.J. Spinelli; his half-siblings, Lance Pearson, Samantha Henry and Richanne Knight; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother and stepdaughter Angela Spinelli.

Arrangements are by Davis Memorial Chapel.

Marjorie B. Surrell



Marjorie Banyea Surrell, 96, died Thursday morning, April 13, 2017, at her home in Newport. She was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Newport, the daughter of Amos and Grace E. (Springer) Banyea.

She attended Windsor schools and graduated from Springfield High School in Springfield, Vermont. On Oct. 20, 1940, she married Ralph Winthrop Surrell. They made their home in Windsor, where they raised their three children.

Being a homemaker she was involved, when her children were growing up, in leadership roles for the Brownies, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts organizations in Windsor, which she greatly enjoyed.

Later she worked at Polly’s Flower Shop on Main Street in Windsor as the assistant clerk of floral arrangements.

Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Ralph, who died Jan. 8, 2002; two brothers, Leonard Banyea and Raymond Everett Banyea; a sister, Dorothy Cummings; and a longtime companion, Leighton Monroe.

She is survived by her son, Raymond Erwin Surrell of Walpole; two daughters, Gloria Jean Bruce of Skowhegan, Maine and Janice Dee Hammond of Glover, Vermont; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor.

Larry W. Griswold



Larry W. Griswold, 64, of North Springfield, passed away Tuesday evening April 11, 2017 at the Springfield Health & Rehab Center in Springfield, Vermont. He was born August 12, 1952 in Springfield, Vermont the son of William and Eleanor (Simonds) Griswold. He attended Springfield Schools, graduating from Springfield High School class of 1971. He served in the United States Army during Vietnam, stationed in Germany. He served 3 years active duty and 10 years in the Guard Reserves.

On September 10, 1977 He married Sueann Sanford at the Weathersfield Center Church in Weathersfield, Vt.

Larry was employed on the assembly floor at Bryant Grinder Co. in Springfield for 23 years. He later owned and operated his own construction and excavating business for many years.

He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, four wheelers and raising miniature ponies and donkeys.

He is survived by his wife Sueann of North Springfield, one brother Christopher Griswold, of North Springfield, one sister Elaine Erskine of North Carolina, and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, and also by his son Shawn Griswold in 1997.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday April 22, 2017 at the Assembly of God Church in Springfield, Vt. Reverend Marc Aube Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery in North Springfield, Vermont.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, Vermont.

Marie C. LeBlanc



Marie C. LeBlanc, 95, of Springfield, passed away Monday evening, April 10, 2017, at Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont, surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 10, 1922, in Coaticook, Canada, the daughter of Edward and Delphine (Roberge) Provencher. She moved to Graniteville, Vermont at age 7 and attended Walden Heights schools. She was a factory and foundry worker in her younger years.

On June 6, 1942, she married Dominic LeBlanc in Hardwick, Vermont. He predeceased her in 1988.

After she was married in 1942, she moved to Springfield, Vermont, where she had made her home for more than 70 years.

She was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield. She enjoyed family gatherings, cooking, sewing and reading. She also loved watching the Red Sox and the Patriots. She was well-known for her chocolate chip cookies and banana bread.

She is survived by two sons, Lawrence LeBlanc of Temecula, California and Roger LeBlanc of Claremont; four daughters, Loretta Thomas of Springfield, Lillian Burns of Springfield, Lucille Peavey of Liberty, Maine and Noella Forbush of Springfield; 24 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, also by many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; one son, Lucien LeBlanc, five brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 12, at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield and the Reverend Peter Williams will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Springfield.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to One Credit Union c/o Marie LeBlanc, 5 Kinney Place Claremont, NH 03743 to set up a future scholarship in Memory of Marie Claire LeBlanc.

Roger K Griggs



Roger K Griggs, 75, passed away Monday, April 10, 2017. He was born July 29, 1941 in Springfield.

Roger was a lifelong resident of Springfield until just a few weeks before his passing.

Roger worked for Jones & Lamson and then later for the Springfield Public Works department.

Survivors include, Eric and wife, Karla Griggs, Stanton; grandchildren, Jillian, Dylan, and Ryan Griggs, and their mother, Jennifer Hood; granddaughter, Kloey Fair; longtime special friends, Lois Smith and Nancy. He was preceded in death by his son, Allen Griggs.

Loretta Wescott



Loretta "Lorrie" Wescott (née Gintof), 84, formerly of Springfield, died on April 3, 2017.

Born in Springfield, VT, Lorrie graduated from Springfield High School in 1950. Mrs. Wescott worked at Hartness House Inn and Bryant Co. in Springfield and American Optical Co. in Keene, NH, where in 1953, she met her beloved, late husband, Guy R. Wescott Jr. They were married in 1955. He later passed away in 1997.

Mrs. Wescott was the proud mother of Lindsay A. (David) Dunne, of Frenchtown, NJ, Guy R. III (Megan) Wescott, of Phoenixville, PA, and the late Richard A. (Christine) Wescott, of Clarence, NY; loving grandmother of Kevin (Jen), Megan, Peter Dunne, Ali, Lexi, Brett and Jake Wescott; daughter of the late Felix and Emilia Gintof; sister of the late Henry J. (Edith) Gintof and Michael E. (Arlene) Gintof, of Springfield, VT; also survived many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lorrie especially treasured her time with her children and grandchildren.

The family will be present Friday, April 21, 4-8 p.m. at Shepard Bros. Funeral Home LLC, 10690 Main St., Clarence, NY; a Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 22, 10 a.m. from Our Lady of Peace Church, 10950 Main St., Clarence, NY. Please assemble at church. Burial to immediately follow in Clarence Fillmore Cemetery.

Mrs. Wescott was a member of the Clarence Senior Center and the Akron/Newstead Senior Center. She enjoyed line dancing, parties and her collection of wonderful lifelong friends from all areas. Her greatest pleasure was taking pictures that captured memories and sharing them with everyone she knew.

Michael A. Shattuck



Michael Alan Shattuck, 72, passed away on Tuesday evening, March 28, 2017 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born November 23, 1944 in Springfield, Vermont, the son of Bernard O. and Mildred (Smith) Shattuck.

He attended Springfield schools, graduating from Springfield High School class of 1962.

He went on to receive an Associate's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Wentworth College, and a Bachelor's Degree from Northeastern University. He served in the Army Reserves.

He was married to Carol (Killion) Shattuck of Reading, MA. They divorced, but maintained an amicable relationship even after they split.

He began his career in the Engineering Department of New England Telephone Co. in Boston, Massachusetts, and was integral to the installation of the company's first solar technology panels. He moved on to Barstow Engineering as an HVAC Engineer and continued to work on the early adoption of solar panel technology with Barstow. He later moved to New Hampshire to run his own business, where he worked as a successful HVAC Engineer.

His entrepreneurial spirit led to owning and operating a General Store and rental property in New Hampshire. While residing in New Hampshire he joined the Masons and was member of the Red Mountain Lodge #68.

Michael was especially fond of lakes and lake life. He was an avid skier and loved skiing Okemo, he enjoyed fishing, boating and hunting - although he once confessed that he didn't really care about being a successful deer hunter. He thought that deer were beautiful and he wouldn't want to kill one.

He was sharp witted and sarcastic. He found sobriety through AA and attempted to make amends with all while also helping others that were struggling.

He was tough in a quiet sort of way. He rarely complained and never wanted to burden anyone.

He is survived by two sons, Michael and his wife Michelle of Andover, Mass., and Steven and his wife Meryl of Ridgewood, N.J.; by one sister, Lynne Colby of Springfield, Vt.; his longtime and loving companion Lois Carmody of North Sandwich, N.H.; his former wife, Carol Shattuck Boben of Reading, Mass., by six grandchildren, and also by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, one brother Peter Shattuck and one sister Kathleen Piatt.

Visiting hours (10 a.m.) and a memorial service (11 a.m.) will be held on Saturday April 22, 2017 at the Davis Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Springfield.
