Barbara P. Taft, 89


Barbara Pauli Taft, born Aug. 17 1927. Barbara Pauli Taft died peacefully on February 29, 2016, at Kendal in Hanover, NH. She was surrounded by family. Barbara is survived by her husband of 67 years, Hugh M. Taft; son, Roderic Taft, and his wife, Christine, of Medfield MA; daughter, Martha Taft, and her husband, Fred Weiss, of Washington DC; son-in-law, Jeffrey Taft-Dick of Springfield VT; 5 grandchildren Jonathan, Joya and Philip Taft-Dick, and Caleb and Jillian Taft; and 2 great grandchildren, She was predeceased by daughters Pamela (2014) and Paula (2007).

Born in the Boston area to William J. and Corinne D. Pauli, she and her brother, Richard, grew up in southern NH. The family moved to Rutland, VT, for high school and she graduated Rutland High, class of 1945. Barbara graduated from Green Mountain Junior College as an academic Gold Medal winner in 1947, majoring in Medical Technology. She worked at Mary Hitchcock Hospital until 1949. Barbara and Hugh were married in 1949 and moved to Springfield, VT, in 1950, where they remained enthusiastic residents until their retirement to Kendal in 1999. Barbara saw her 4 children all graduate from Springfield public schools. She served on the Springfield High School Building Committee in the late 1960s, as a representative to a State Health Care policy committee, and volunteer on many Springfield activities, such as chairwoman of the annual clothing exchange to benefit the needy.

Barbara and Hugh were loyal members of the First Congregational Church of Springfield for 49 years, particularly noted for singing in the choir. Barbara was an accomplished leader of the soprano section even though she never had formal training. Barbara was noted for her welcoming nature, particularly people of other cultures and countries. She had foreign visitors in their home frequently and hosted the AFS students at Springfield in 1967-68 (Aberash Melkie of Ethiopia) and 1969-70 (Tim Chan of Malaysia). Patricia A. Matulonis, 67


Patricia A. Matulonis, 67, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was born Aug. 18, 1948, in Springfield, the daughter of Roland and Irene (Lorinovich ) Carlisle. She graduated from Springfield High School, class of 1965, and from North Hampton Commercial College, class of 1967. She worked for a brief time at Mass Mutual Insurance in Springfield, Mass. On July 15, 1967, she married Gregory Matulonis at United Methodist Church in Springfield. They made their home in Springfield for many years before moving to Perkinsville, where they lived for 17 years.

Mrs. Matulonis was a stay-at-home mother until her children reached school age. She then began 35 years of service to the Springfield school system, starting as a para-educator, then as secretary to the principal of Union St. School, then as secretary at Park Street School until her retirement in 2008. She mentored several children and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and RSVP. She was a member of First Congregational Church UCC in Springfield. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Gregory; her sons Jeffrey and Michael; three grandchildren; a sister, Diane Temple; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, Roland and Irene Carlisle; and her brother, Richard Carlisle.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2016, at Davis Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at the First Congregational Church UCC on Main St. in Springfield. The Rev. Jean O’Bresky will officiate. A reception will follow the service downstairs at the church. Arthur F. Goodwin, 85


Arthur Fairbanks Goodwin, 85, of Williston, VT, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016. He was born September 12, 1930 in Springfield, VT, the oldest of 6 children, to Ernest and Louise (Fairbanks) Goodwin. He grew up in Springfield and Hyde Park, Vermont and Portland, Maine. Art achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, graduated from Wentworth Institute, and attended many classes at UVM; one course shy of obtaining his degree when he was severely injured from a fall. Art was a corporal in the United States Army. He served in both Korea and Japan. He was an Electrical Engineer for General Electric for 35 years, retiring in 1988. Art was an outdoor enthusiast who loved hunting and fishing. He developed a tree farm on his beloved acreage near the Green River Reservoir. He became a member of the Vermont Woodlands Association and received the “Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year “ award in 1995 and 2004.

Art leaves behind his wife, Jean Twiss, after 62 years of marriage. He also leaves his 4 children: his daughters, Sharon and her husband Wayne Beebe, of Essex Junction, Vermont, and their children Eileen and Andrew Beebe; and Diane and her husband David Goulet, of Milton, Vermont, and their children Michelle and Matthew Goulet. His sons, Jeffrey and his wife Lisa, of Jericho, Vermont, and their children Christopher, Megan, and Justin; and Stephen and his wife Debra, of Montpelier, Vermont, and their child Ashley Zimmerman and her husband Ty. He also leaves 2 great-grandchildren, Adelyn and Chesni Zimmerman. He is survived by his siblings; Mary Jean Macy and her husband Robert, of St Albans, Vermont; Barbara Putnam and her husband David, of Green Valley, Arizona; David Goodwin of Hyde Park, Vermont; Thomas F Goodwin and his wife Janet, of Milton, Vermont; and Rob Goodwin and his wife Cecile, of Williston, Vermont. Also left behind are his sister-in-law Shirley Perkins, of Dummerston, Vermont and brother-in-law Lee Twiss, of Reading, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his parents and sister-in-laws, Ruth Twiss and Eloise Goodwin; and brother-in law James Perkins; and his beloved dog,Rachel. He also is survived numerous nieces and nephews. He enjoyed going to Cardiac Rehabilitation and camaraderie he experienced while there. The family wishes to thank all of his great caregivers, especially, Cathy Smith-Muir RN, Dr Peter Gunther, Dr Joseph Winget and Nancy Strong NP. He will be greatly missed by his numerous friends and family.

Helen Stearns Childs, 102


Helen Stearns Childs, 102, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016. She was born in Springfield, Vermont, on May 6, 1913, to Ruby (White) and Roy Stearns. She was one of four children. She attended Springfield schools, graduating in 1932. She worked for Bernard Taylor, DDS, in Springfield as an dental hygienist prior to her marriage to Lewis Childs, June 3, 1939. They resided on Leonard Avenue in Springfield for 64 years. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Springfield, Vermont, and recently the First United Methodist Church in Gilford. She and her late husband were avid golfers and members of the Crown Point Country Club in Springfield, Vermont. She volunteered for the Red Cross driving blood donors to and from the hospital during WWII and for the Senior Citizens of Springfield when she was older than some of her passengers. Helen's hobbies included knitting, crocheting and sewing. She enjoyed a full social life with friends and family. She had a great sense of humor and entertained all with wonderful stories.

Survivors include her two daughters, Marlene Witham and husband David of Sanbornton, with whom she made her home since 2003, and daughter Rebecca Noyes and her husband William of Westminster, Vermont. She also leaves her special nieces and nephew, Roy Stearns and Joan Carey both of Springfield, Vermont, and Betty Farnsworth of Hartland, Vermont. She is survived by 11 grandchildren: Shannon Noyes Fuller and her husband, Justin, of Westminster, Vermont; Jennifer Noyes and her partner, Steven Frank, of Middletown, Connecticut; Ned Witham and his wife, Carolyn, of Canterbury; Aaron Witham and his wife, Alison, of Gilford; Bethany Witham Lamprey and her husband, Jameson, of Sanbornton; and Tho Ngo and his wife, Thu, of Sugar Land, Texas. She has 11 great-grandchildren: Cedric, Charles, Noah and Margaret Witham of Canterbury; Ryan and Jordan Witham of Gilford; Cameron, Nathaniel and Evan Lamprey of Sanbornton; and Vy and Phi Ngo of Sugar Land, Texas.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family in the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield, Vermont. There will be no calling hours. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is handling the arrangements. Maurice White, 87


Maurice White, 87, of Winter Street in Claremont, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at Springfield Hospital. He was born Dec. 29, 1928, to Ernest and Mary (Eastman) White. He was a native and a lifelong resident of Claremont.

At an early age, he worked for his father on a dairy farm, and then went to work at Cone Blanchard Machine Company in Windsor. He then started his own business, selling and servicing power equipment for about 12 years, and later returned to Cone. After that, he worked at Bryant Grinder in Springfield and retired from there in June 1990.

In August of 1971, while running his shop and selling Ski-Doo snowmobiles, he saw a great need for a snowmobile club in Claremont. He called Everett Coutermarsh, the state director, and talked to him. He then asked Hawky Boardman and Jim Hanks, both snowmobile dealers, and asked if they would help get a club started in Claremont. On Aug. 10, 1971, at the Claremont Police courtroom, with 65 people present, a SVSR was formed. The club became very active and at one time was the largest in the state. Mr. White also enjoyed restoring old cars and farm tractors. He loved woodworking, camping, and owned motorcycles on and off for most of his life. He and his wife were members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association Chapter F of New Hampshire.

He was predeceased by four sisters, Ruth Roy, Esther L. Coleman, Edna Curtis and Edith Ownes; his two brothers, Ernest C. White and Raymond F. White. The surviving family includes his wife, Loretta M. (Plourde), whom he married Sept. 30, 1949; and two sons, Larry A. and Randall E., both of Claremont; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A memorial and committal service will be held in the spring. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Claremont Senior Center, 5 Acer Heights, in Claremont. Barbara A. Piletz, 100


Barbara A. Piletz, 100, of Charlestown, died Sunday, Feb. 21, at her home. The daughter of George H. Adams and Etta A. Linfield, she was born in Randolph, Vermont in 1916 and lived in Braintree, Vermont, a place close to her heart. She also lived in Mascoma, Claremont and Cornish Flat and attended Kimball Union Academy, of which she was proud. She married Walter A. Piletz Sr., in 1937, and they moved to Charlestown in 1938 — her home ever since.

She was a member of the Braintree Hill Meeting House Historical Society and the Congregational Church in Charlestown. She loved meeting new people with whom she would always make immediate conversation. She regularly shared stories and poems. She loved her family and her countless special friends, including those she would meet with regularly at McDonald's in Springfield. She worked at Montgomery Ward and the Queen Shop in Claremont and Connecticut River Bank in Charlestown. She was a caregiver to many and for years, along with her husband, kept a skating rink for use by town children.

She is survived by her daughter, Carole A. Curtis of Charlestown; her son and daughter-in-law, Walter A. Piletz Jr., and Debra Piletz of Charlestown; four grandchildren, Monty J. Curtis of Boston, Massachusetts, Jessica L. Hagland (Scott) of Charlestown, Meredith B. McAllister of Charlestown and Damon M. Piletz (Angel) of Bergen, New York; 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother and father, her husband of 66 years, four brothers, two sisters, nieces and nephews.

Kelby J. Pugh, 44


Kelby J. Pugh, 44, formerly of Springfield, died Friday, February 19, 2016, at his home in Kekaha, Hawaii. He was born Nov. 1, 1971, in Springfield, the son of John and Susan (Cartier) Pugh. He attended Springfield schools, graduated from Springfield High School and attended Wagner College. Mr. Pugh was a carpenter working in the building and construction industry for many years. He enjoyed scuba diving and surfing.

He is survived by his parents of Springfield; his daughter, Kamala, of London, England; four brothers, Tyler, Corey, Max and Alex; two nephews; maternal grandparents Leo and Helen Cartier; three aunts; one uncle; and numerous cousins.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mary K. Laber, 97


Mary K. Laber, 97, passed away Friday afternoon, Feb. 12, 2016, at the Elm Wood Center in Claremont. She was born June 10, 1918, in Springfield, the daughter of Michael and Ustena (Koudrate) Kazak. She attended Springfield schools. On Aug. 8, 1936, she married Ferris R. Laber in Springfield. He predeceased her on July 1, 2010. Mary was a mother and homemaker, who also worked at Jones and Lamson Machine Tool Company for several years, the Idlenot Farm and Dairy and was a night manager at the Idlenot Restaurant.

She was a member of the North Springfield Baptist Church and a member of the Twenty Niners. She was an outstanding cook, and a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by one son, Robert M. Laber of Charlestown; two daughters, Debbie Lorinovich of York, Maine, and Susan Rock of Bridgeton, Maine; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Ferris; one son, Richard F. Laber; two brothers, Walter Kazak and Connie Kazak; and three sisters, Lena Blanc, Nellie Riel and Annie Peterson.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at the North Springfield Baptist Church, Reverend George Keeler, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Oakland Cemetery in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the North Springfield Baptist Church, P.O. Linda L. Richards, 67


Linda L. Richards, 67, of Charlestown, passed away Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born Sept. 19, 1948, in Weston, Vermont, the daughter of Malcolm and Doris (Potter) Woodcock.

She was a graduate of Springfield High School. Linda had worked for North Country Smokehouse for seven years and for UniFirst for two years. She was a member of the Life Fellowship Church and was very faithful in her religion. Linda enjoyed baking, listening to country music and reading. She loved spending time with her family and her cats and other animals.

The family includes her husband, Howard P. Richards Sr., with whom she shared more than 28 years of marriage; her children, Carolyn Morse of Denver, Colorado, Jean Morse of Claremont, George Morse of Springfield, Emery Morse Jr., of Windsor, Andrea Carrier and her husband, Matt, of Unity and Howard G. Richards and his girlfriend, April, of Charlestown; three granddaughters, Heather Morse, Tiffany Carrier and Emily Carrier; and one sister, Terry Ferris of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Karena Merrill.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, at Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad St., in Claremont. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the funeral home, with Pastor David Grasso officiating. Burial will be held at Pine Crest Cemetery in the spring. James A. Soucy, 64


James A. Soucy, 64, of North Springfield, husband of Jill E. Markert, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, February 9, 2016, at Springfield Hospital. He was born July 18, 1951, to Harold A. and Anna Marie (Klett) Soucy in Fort Worth, Texas. After graduating from Lamar High School in Houston, Texas, James earned a BA in history from Baylor University, followed by a master’s degree in sports fitness.

He served as a consultant at the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico before returning to Texas to earn a BS in electrical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, after which he accepted a position as a semiconductor equipment engineer at Sematech. James loved to work with his hands. He could fix almost anything from crew shells to old houses to semiconductor equipment.

He met the love of his life, Jill Markert, while they were maintaining racing shells together at the Austin Rowing Club. The couple married in Springfield on July 24, 1997 and moved to Springfield in August 2006. James was happy to leave behind the big-city bustle of Austin for a quieter small-town life in Vermont. He fit himself right into the Springfield community, volunteering at the Springfield Humane Society and the Springfield Warming Shelter. He was a member of the Springfield Budget Committee and the North School Preservation Society. He was also a friend of the First Congregational Church and a member of the church book group. In his younger days, James was an avid cyclist and an active member of the Austin Rowing Club. Later, he was a devoted dog owner who enjoyed bringing his Labradors to run in one of the many natural open spaces in Springfield.

James was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews whom he nurtured and encouraged with his integrity and deeply thoughtful and quiet manner. He is survived by his wife, Jill; his sister, Linda Collins of Upland, California, and her daughter, Christa Collins of Fullerton, California; as well as numerous Markert relatives.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at the First Congregational Church UCC on Main Street in Springfield with Reverend Jean O’Bresky, pastor, officiating. A reception at the church will follow. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Springfield Warming Shelter, P.O. Box 243, North Springfield, VT 05150; the Springfield Humane Society, 401 Skitchewaug Trail, Springfield, VT 05156; the North School Preservation Society, 2087 Reservoir Road, Perkinsville, VT 05151; or to a charity of one’s choice. Elizabeth Merritt, 78


Elizabeth Merritt, 78, of Chester, passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. She was born June 2, 1937, in Springfield, the daughter of Rosario and Laura (Buskey) Pignato. She attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School, Class of 1955. On Oct. 19, 1957, she married Thomas Merritt in Springfield. They resided in the Chester area for many years.

She worked at Bryant Grinder Corporation in Springfield, Mack Molding in Cavendish, and later worked as a seamstress for the Tony Totes Company. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary 67 in Chester, and a member of the VFW Post 771 Auxiliary in Springfield. She enjoyed camping, gardening, playing bingo and cribbage and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband Thomas of Chester; three sons, Robert Merritt of Springfield, Richard Merritt of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and James Merritt of Charlestown; one daughter, Carol Batchelder of Rockingham; one sister, Pauline Lehoullier of Johnson, Vermont; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by an infant son, Alden; two brothers, Joseph Pignato and Patsy Pignato, and two sisters, Mary Wyman and Victoria Davis.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Simonsville Cemetery in Andover, Vermont. Reverend Gail Kindberg will officiate. A gathering will follow the service and the location will be announced at a later date. Barbara J. Martin, 62


Barbara J. Martin, 62, of Newport, N.H., died unexpectedly on February 4, 2016 at New London Hospital. She was born on February 1, 1954 in Springfield, Vermont to Norman and Josephine (Garcia) Jarvis. She grew up in Springfield before moving to Newport. Barbara enjoyed playing bingo and sewing blankets. She was a race fan and liked watching squirrels, mice and skunks.

Barbara was predeceased by her father. She is survived by her husband, Wilbur G. Martin; mother, Josephine Jarvis of Claremont; children, Keith Martin, Sr. of Claremont, Shawn Martin and his partner, Nicole Adair of Claremont, Steven Martin of Charlestown, Sally Martin and her partner, Ray Ladeau of Newport, Mandy Martin and her partner, Shawn Cherbonneau of Claremont; brothers, Andrew Jarvis and his wife, Pam of Perkinsville, Vermont, Larry Jarvis and his wife, Karen of Virginia; sisters, Linda Wilcox and her husband, Roy of Claremont, Rose Lovell and her husband, Bob of Claremont, Betty Jarvis of Meriden, New Hamphshire; grandchildren, Kristin, Keith, Jr., Ethan, Roy and Chelsea Martin, Madison and Marissa Aldrich and James Wallace and many extended family members.

Mary Ann Wallace, 76


Mary Ann Wallace, 76, a longtime resident of Springfield, passed away Thursday morning, February 4 at Lebanon Center Genesis Healthcare in Lebanon, New Hampshire. She was born March 29, 1939 in Newport, Vermont, the daughter of Carroll K. and Edith W. (Barlow) Wood. She received her schooling in Claremont, New Hampshire and attended Stevens High School. She married Frederick A. Wallace in Springfield on November 28, 1955. She was a homemaker for many years, proudly raising her six children. She also did child care at her home in Springfield. Mary had a wonderful sense of humor and was known by her family as “Our Social Butterfly." She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at the senior center, both in Springfield. She was fond of sports, and especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Her husband passed away in 2005. She was also predeceased by her parents and one daughter, Donna Nakhla in 2013, and by two sons, Alan Wallace in 1997 and Randy Wallace in 2012. Survivors include one daughter, Diane Johnson and her husband, John of Weathersfield, Vermont; two sons, James Wallace and his wife, XueMei of Gulf Shores, Alabama and Timothy Wallace and his wife, Carmen of Springfield, Vermont; two brothers, Dennison Wood and his wife, Judy of Springdale, Arkansas and Roderick Wood and his wife, Leann of Southwick, Massachusetts; one sister, Beverly Paine of Gardner, Massachusetts; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Wallace of Springfield, Vermont; nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

At her request, a graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring in the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield. Katharine S. Young, 85


Katharine S. Young of Charlestown, 85, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Valley Regional Hospital. She was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Everett, Massachusetts, the daughter of Elderic Barry and Evangeline Barry-Ranahan. Katharine had owned and operated Frenchie’s Grocery in Charlestown. She was a member of the Miller Art Center, the Saxtons River Art Guild, the American Legion, the Elks, the Moose, the Charlestown Senior Center and the Springfield Senior Center. Katharine loved to dance, sing karaoke, to play shuffleboard and cribbage. Her passion was her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Lorraine Moore and her husband, Dennis, of Newton, New Hampshire; her sons, Joseph J. Innes and his wife, Ruth, of Bethany Bay, Delaware and Kevin M. Innes and his husband, Vincent Andrews, of Randolph, Massachusetts; a daughter-in-law, Robin Innes of Litchfield, New Hampshire; four grandchildren, Amanda Dominguez and her husband, Nico, Joseph Innes and his wife, Diana, Scott Innes and his wife, Brittany, and Katy Innes; two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Biancha; one brother, Eldric Barry of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph John Innes II; a son, Scott F. Innes; and a sister, Patricia Hunt.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at the Charlestown Memorial Chapel. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the St. Catherine of Siena Church in Charlestown, with Father Steven Lepine officiating. Burial will be held privately. Marcel P. Rouillard, 87


Marcel P. Rouillard, 87, of Claremont, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, in the company of his loving family. He was born March 20, 1928, in Mansonville, Quebec, the son of Alphonse and Adelia (Lessard) Rouillard. He attended school in Mansonville. As a young man he worked on his family’s dairy farm and as a logger and trucker. After immigrating to the United States in 1952, Marcel was employed at Keil Lock in Charlestown and at Lovejoy Tool in Springfield as a machinist until his retirement in 1991. On Oct. 11, 1952, he married Theresa Lavoie of Newport. Marcel was a longtime communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Claremont. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and family time. br />
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Theresa; son, Bernard and his wife, Eleanor, of Windham, New Hampshire; daughter, Pauline of Loyalton, California and son, Robert and his wife, Cindy of Lempster; granddaughter, Mirielle Rouillard and her husband, Craig Potter, of Manchester, New Hampshire; grandson, Hunter Rouillard of Windham, New Hampshire; great-granddaughter, Elle Adelia; brother, Paul of Mansonville, Quebec; sisters, Madeline Lariviere of Richford, Vermont, Annette Dieziel of Newport and Reine Cote of St. Hubert, Quebec; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers, Rene, Raymond, Robert, Gerald and Germain; two sisters, Rose Lariviere and Beth Lariviere.

Visiting hours will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, prior to mass. A mass of Christian burial will begin at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church in Claremont with Father Shawn Therrien officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. John J. Oliver Jr., 83


John J. Oliver Jr., 83, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 4, 2016, at Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born June 5, 1932, in Perkinsville, the son of John J. Sr. and Margaret (Gallagher) Oliver. He attended Perkinsville schools and graduated from Springfield High School Class of 1950. He was also a graduate of Tractor Trailer and Heavy Equipment Schools.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, and then served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. On May 8, 1965, he married Nylene Wheeler in Chester. She predeceased him Feb. 16, 2013. A native of Perkinsville, he moved to Ocala, Florida in 1988, where he made his home until returning to Vermont in 2013. He was employed as a truck driver in the area for many years. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of the VFW, the Marine Corps League and the American Legion.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Nylene; three brothers, Lawrence, Christopher and Alfred; and by one sister, Irene Durland.

A funeral mass will be celebrated in the spring at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield, with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Springfield Humane Society, 401 Skitchewaug Trail, Springfield, VT 05156. Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Ann L. Brown, 65


Ann L. Brown 65, died Feb. 3, 2016, at her home in Springfield. She was born Dec. 27, 1950, in Holland, Vt., the daughter of Austin and Marjorie (Durgin) Annis. She lived in North Wolcott with her husband of more than 35 years, Arnold "Beanie" Brown, for most of her adult life while raising her family. Mrs. Brown worked as a caregiver in the mental health field for many years. She worked as a bartender, as a driver for Springfield Auto Mart and Davey Tree Service. Ann moved to Springfield in 2009, where she lived with her high school sweetheart, Wayne Gomez. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, playing bingo with friends, traveling and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her mother, Marjorie Annis of Derby; two sons Claude Brown of Elmore and Robert Brown of North Wolcott; one brother, Timothy Annis; three grandchildren; great-grandchildren; her companion, Wayne Gomez; cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father, Austin Annis; one grandchild; and husbands Dave Willey and Sherm Chaffee.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, at the Coventry Community Center on Main Street in Coventry. Flowers or memorial donations can be brought to the Community Center the day of the gathering. Arrangements are by Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Bertha L. Smith, 99


Bertha Lane Smith, 99, a native of Springfield, died Feb. 3, 2016, in South Daytona, Fla. She was born in Springfield and lived there until her husband of 66 years, Angus Smith, died in 2005. She married Mr. Smith June 3, 1939.

She then lived in Port Orange, Fla., prior to moving into her sister Della's home in South Daytona. Mrs. Smith worked for Jones & Lamson Machine Tool Co. and attorney Douglas Richards of Springfield. She enjoyed reading, gardening, crossword puzzles, sewing, knitting, crocheting and other crafts. She made many RV trips across the country with her husband and their friends.

Survivors include her three children, Carol Ann, Willard and Neal; a sister, Della Henderson; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her brothers Alton, Ralph, William, Eugene, Ellis and Richard; and sisters Arlene Shannon, June Smith and Ettis Prouty.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, with visitation at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Methodist Church, 10 Valley St., Springfield, VT 05156.

Victor P. Jarvis, 91


Victor P. Jarvis, 91, a longtime resident of Ascutney, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 1, 2016, at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 30, 1924, in Claremont, the son of Philip and Eva (Greenwood) Jarvis. He received his schooling in Claremont. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Vermont. He married Virginia Dubuque in Newport on April 13, 1946. Mr. Jarvis was employed at the former Cone Blanchard in Windsor. He started Jarvis and Sons Construction in Ascutney in 1951, which he owned and operated for many years.Victor was a member of the VFW in Springfield. He truly enjoyed working and spending time on projects in his garage, visiting with many friends and family, sharing stories. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Raymond and Richard Jarvis; and one granddaughter. Survivors include his loving wife of 70 years, Virginia Jarvis; two daughters, Phyllis Jarvis and her husband, Patrick Howe, of Claremont and Brenda Bulluss and her husband, Donald, of Ascutney; four sons, Donald Jarvis and his wife, Gloria, of Claremont, Victor Jarvis and his wife, JoAnn, of Springfield, Dwight Jarvis and his wife, Bonnie, and Peter Jarvis and his wife, Judy, all of Ascutney; one brother, Gordon Jarvis of Corona, California; 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and one special family caregiver, Angel Kamandua of Ascutney.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at with Pastor Will Hunter officiating. Committal services with military honors will be held in the spring at Ascutneyville Cemetery in Ascutney. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ascutney Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.
