Maurice White, 87

Maurice White, 87, of Winter Street in Claremont, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at Springfield Hospital. He was born Dec. 29, 1928, to Ernest and Mary (Eastman) White. He was a native and a lifelong resident of Claremont.

At an early age, he worked for his father on a dairy farm, and then went to work at Cone Blanchard Machine Company in Windsor. He then started his own business, selling and servicing power equipment for about 12 years, and later returned to Cone. After that, he worked at Bryant Grinder in Springfield and retired from there in June 1990.

In August of 1971, while running his shop and selling Ski-Doo snowmobiles, he saw a great need for a snowmobile club in Claremont. He called Everett Coutermarsh, the state director, and talked to him. He then asked Hawky Boardman and Jim Hanks, both snowmobile dealers, and asked if they would help get a club started in Claremont. On Aug. 10, 1971, at the Claremont Police courtroom, with 65 people present, a SVSR was formed. The club became very active and at one time was the largest in the state. Mr. White also enjoyed restoring old cars and farm tractors. He loved woodworking, camping, and owned motorcycles on and off for most of his life. He and his wife were members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association Chapter F of New Hampshire.

He was predeceased by four sisters, Ruth Roy, Esther L. Coleman, Edna Curtis and Edith Ownes; his two brothers, Ernest C. White and Raymond F. White. The surviving family includes his wife, Loretta M. (Plourde), whom he married Sept. 30, 1949; and two sons, Larry A. and Randall E., both of Claremont; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A memorial and committal service will be held in the spring. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Claremont Senior Center, 5 Acer Heights, in Claremont. Arrangements are with the Stringer Funeral Home & Crematorium, 146 Broad St., in Claremont. To view an online memorial or send a private message of condolence, visit www.stringerfh.com.
