Madalene E. Paine

Madalene E. Paine, 100, of Springfield passed away on Wednesday morning December 6, 2017 at the Springfield Health & Rehab. Center.

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts on January 31, 1917, she was the daughter of Walter Lacillade and Laura ( Sparrow) Lacillade. As a child, she lived part of each year with her extended family in Montpelier and Barre, Vermont, until her family relocated to Springfield when she was nine years old. From that time onward, Springfield was her home. Even so, she spent many summers travelling to northern Vermont to spend time with her beloved cousins Katherine (McGrath) Sherman and Barbara McGrath and their mutual extended family.

As a young woman, Maddie worked in private service doing general housework for both the Damon and Hildebrandt families of Springfield. She subsequently was hired as an employee of the Jones and Lampson company. Originally hired as a cafeteria worker who pushed carts of food through the shop to distribute it to workers (she was one of three women assigned to this work), she rose to become the cafeteria’s assistant cashier and then its head cashier. During World War II, her shifts ran seven days a week and she often worked back-to-back shifts keeping her at J&L through both the day and the night.

Maddie met Lester E. Paine, Jr. of Providence, Rhode Island when he came to the Springfield area to work in a WPA Camp prior to the war. They married in December of 1945 after Lester returned from service in the Pacific Islands. It was a no-frills ceremony, and they spent the rest of their 49 years of married life arguing about what the exact date of their marriage ceremony had been. Maddie continued for a while to work at J&L as a part-time cashier, and she and Lester built their own home with their own hands in the Goulds Mills section of Springfield. Together they raised their two children and two grandchildren until Lester passed away in 1995.

Maddie’s hobbies included voraciously reading books (the “cozies” genre of mysteries were her favorite type) and exercising her outstanding cooking skills. Throughout her life, she was a caregiver to others. At various points when she was needed, she took into her home her mother, her only sister Pearl Lacillade Dana, her father-in-law Lester E. Paine Sr., and her maternal uncle Orlando Sparrow. During her husband’s final illness, she was his primary caregiver for 2 years. She was also instrumental in raising her two grandchildren, and her house was a permanent “second home” for them throughout their childhood.

She is survived by her daughter Linda Regan and her son-in-law Bruce Regan of Springfield, her son Richard E. Paine and his Husband John Shindler of Naperville, Illinois, her grandson Shane K. Regan of Brooklyn, NY., her granddaughter Shannon L. Regan of Portland, Maine, and numerous much beloved cousins (particularly the Sherman and McGrath families) living in northern Vermont.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday December 11, 2017 at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, Vt. Reverend George Keeler will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield.

Friends may call at the Chapel on Monday from 10:00 – 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Springfield Humane Society 401 Skitchewaug Trail Springfield, Vermont 05156

Marion Whitcomb Stearns

Marion Whitcomb Stearns of Springfield passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017, at the Springfield Hospital, after a brief illness. Born on June 10, 1924, in Rochester, NH, the daughter of Harold and Marion (Corbett) Sheahan, she grew up in Somersworth, NH, spending summers at the family cottage on Moody Beach, ME. She loved the ocean. Valedictorian of her high school class, she continued her education at the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1945, cum laude, with a BA in Music Education.

Marion moved to Springfield, VT, where she obtained a music teaching position with the public schools there in September 1945.

Marion married Merrill "Deak" Whitcomb in 1947, sharing a life with him and their two daughters, Hallie Jean and Cherry, on the scenic Mount Ararat farm, which has been in the family since the late-1700s. Her work ethic and energy were evident as she balanced a life of teaching, raising children and meeting the many demands of farm life. Merrill passed away in 1978 after a long illness through which Marion tended him lovingly.

After many satisfying years teaching mainly vocal music with some instrumental, covering most of the Springfield schools, she retired in 1980.

Robert Stearns, whom Marion had met while at UNH, reconnected with her on a trip east from California flying in his home-built airplane. They were married at a private ceremony on the Whitcomb farm a year later, September 1982.

Marion and Bob lived in Livermore, CA, where Marion soon became a vital part of the community and made many dear friends. She was active in the UU Church, the Livermore-Amador Symphony Orchestra and Guild, the community exercise group, and contributed to many groups through her musical talents of singing, piano and violin. Bob joined her in the church and LAS activities when he retired from Bechtel Corp. Marion and Bob enjoyed flying to many places in his plane for over 20 years, including two trips to New England. Due to the limitations of the lightweight plane, which could not carry two people plus luggage over the Rockies, Marion would fly commercially to Michigan, where daughter Cherry lived, and Bob would pick her up there so the two could continue on to see friends in New England.

Alzheimer's disease caught up with Bob, and he passed in November 2011. With no relatives in California, Marion moved back to Vermont in November 2013 to live with her daughter, Hallie. She happily renewed friendships from her prior years in Springfield and became active in the local UU Church. Marion's greatest joy was putting a smile on the faces of others. She did this often by making creative cards, telling jokes and singing songs to strangers and friends alike, playing piano for others everywhere she could.

Video from September 2016: Marion sings the simple little song she would always teach to new first graders in their first class together.

Marion learned how to fold origami cranes, pinwheels, boats and hats from her Japanese daughter, Yuko. People will see these treasures all over town as she gave them away to youth and adults alike as thanks or just to brighten their days. This made her smile, as well.

Marion is survived by daughters Hallie Whitcomb, of Springfield, and Cherry (Ken) Westerman, of Ann Arbor, MI; grandchildren Erica Westerman, of Fayetteville, AR, and Michael (Brittany) Westerman, of Bloomfield Hills, MI; step-grandchild Katrina (Stearns) Slater, of Santa Cruz, CA; three special nieces and many cousins.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 21 Fairground Road, Springfield, VT.

Marion has requested that, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The Unitarian Universalist Church in Springfield, 21 Fairground Road, Springfield, VT 05156; The Vermont Land Trust, 8 Bailey Ave., Montpelier, VT 05602; Springfield School District Music Department, 60 Park St., Springfield, VT 05156; or the Livermore-Amador Symphony, P.O. Box 1049, Livermore, CA 94551-1049.

Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield is assisting with arrangements.

Last June,  Marion enjoyed being part of the North School Preservation Society's first ever Alumni parade entry.

Lois M. Severance

Lois M. Severance passed away Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, a week shy of her 89th birthday, after a long battle with cancer. Born in 1928 in Windham, Vermont, to Leonard and Ruth Call Stowell, she went to school in Chester and trained as a nurse at Gifford Memorial hospital. She began her nursing career in Washington, D.C. but returned to Vermont where she married Dean Severance. Lois and Dean lived for a few years in Lubbock, Texas, but her path led her back to New England, where she continued her nursing career at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin and, subsequently, in Keene, New Hampshire.

Lois retired in Springfield, Vermont, where she embraced a new role as an RSVP volunteer — driving seniors and others to appointments, reading to the blind, and helping Meals on Wheels. Her most treasured volunteer role was as a leader of the Bone Builders Exercise Program. She was a fierce promoter of exercise, and walked nearly every day until only a few weeks before her death.

After moved to the Marion Phillips Housing complex in Claremont in 2014, Lois became an active member of the Tenant’s Association. She greatly enjoyed her time there — especially the opportunity to grow bumper crops of tomatoes and swap gardening tips with the other gardeners, right up through this past summer.

Lois lived her life with pizazz — in addition to being a loving mother and compassionate nurse, she was a talented painter, a terrific cook and baker, and a passionate advocate for women’s rights and other social issues. She spoke her mind and wrote letters to the editor, and loved travel, opera, and a good bargain. With her deep love of nature, she saw us all as children of Mother Earth.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Stephen Roylance, of New York City; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Ann Severance of Barre, Vermont; and five siblings: Mildred Horn, Joyce Mattson, Beverly Parker, Norman Stowell, Virginia Stowell, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Dean Severance, and sisters Marilyn Schuster, Sharon Geary, Phyllis Amsden, Helen Farrar and Doris Raitenan.

A celebration of Lois’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 21 Fairground Road in Springfield, Vermont. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to organizations that support nature, green space, and the environment.

In Service of God and Country

6/29/2015

Seventy years ago, World War II was almost a year old. The United States had yet to enter the war directly, though they were sending supplies to their allies in Europe. Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia were marching (literally and figuratively) through Europe and Asia, defeating and laying claim to those countries they desired. It was a frightening time at home and abroad. And things had only just begun.

As the world remembers the 75th anniversary of its second world war, we would like to take the opportunity to spotlight a few Advent Christian Village members who served our United States as servicemen and women during those years of war. Without the personal sacrifices of brave individuals from all over, the outcome of the last world war would not have been as favorable. One such individual is Cushman Bryant.

Cushman grew up in Vermont. After the war had been going on for a few years, he received a draft notice during the summer of 1943. Not having yet graduated from high school, Cushman’s mother and principal worked it out that Cushman could receive a deferment in order to complete his senior year in half the time and report for military service during the winter of 1944. Cushman says he believes his teachers took pity on him, helping him to pass all his senior classes in half a year, and sending him off to Navy boot camp in January 1944.

After World War II had been going on for a few years, Cushman Bryant received a draft notice during the summer of 1943. Not having yet graduated from high school, Cushman’s mother and principal worked it out that Cushman could receive a deferment in order to complete his senior year in half the time and report for military service during the winter of 1944. Cushman said he believes his teachers took pity on him, helping him to pass all his senior classes in half a year, and sending him off to Navy boot camp in January 1944.

After boot camp, Cushman was assigned to the USS Waldron, a destroyer named for John C. Waldron, a US Naval aviator who led a squadron of torpedo bombers earlier in the war. Cushman was assigned as a gunner’s mate, but construction on the ship was not finished until early summer 1944.

Stationed in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a short distance by train from his hometown of North Springfield, Vermont, Cushman was granted leave to return home for his high school graduation ceremony. Though administration had asked for all applause to be held until the last name was called, when Cushman strode across the stage in uniform to receive his diploma, he received a standing ovation.

For the next two years, Cushman served on the Waldron. The Waldron’s main duty was to escort ships in the Pacific which were putting the pressure on Japanese forces.

One of the more memorable events Cushman remembers is when a Japanese picket boat attacked another destroyer and then attempted to break by the Waldron in order to get to the ships the destroyers were protecting. The Waldron could not fire on the boat because of its proximity to the other destroyer, so she rammed the picket boat, splitting it in two.

During Cushman’s two years as a sailor, he says he may not have advanced in rank or performed any memorable military service, but he is well remembered because of his faith.

Cushman and two other men, after finding each other because all three read their Bibles and prayed in their bunks, approached the captain about holding regular religious services on the Waldron. The captain granted their request and supported them, even when others fought to end their activities. Cushman had not previously had any ideas of becoming a preacher or missionary, but he readily and willingly acted as a chaplain for the men serving on the Waldron, including the captain himself.

Cushman remembers fondly one particular sailor. On occasion, when in port, those who were involved in religious services on the separate destroyers would get together for what they called revival services. One of those times, an inebriated sailor approached Cushman and asked if they could pray together. Despite being warned by another chaplain that the sailor was most likely going to give Cushman trouble the next day, Cushman says he responded, “If someone asks me to pray with them, I’m going to pray.” The next day, Cushman found the sailor and discovered that he had left home on bad terms with his family and was now praying that God would heal those relationships. At a Waldron reunion, years later, people remembered that sailor and how Cushman had helped him turn his life around.

Cushman has attended several reunions of the crews of the USS Waldron. In fact, he has the special honor of being a “plank owner,” meaning he was one of the original crew aboard the Waldron when it was first commissioned.

After his time in the Navy, Cushman attended the New England School of Theology and served as pastor at many churches in the east, even after his retirement to Advent Christian Village. At Waldron reunions, he is known as Reverend Bryant and has been asked to pray, and he has also performed a wedding ceremony.

We thank Cushman for his years of service to our country. But, more than that, we thank God that he used Cushman to support and reach so many sailors through love and ministry.
