Howard A. Currier


Howard “Howie” A. Currier, 78, of Springfield, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2016, at Springfield Health and Rehab Center in Springfield.

He was born Dec. 29, 1937, in New London, the son of Amos Charles Sr. and Bernice Marjorie (Woodward) Currier.

Howard graduated from Towle High School in Newport in 1955. On June 21, 1958, he married Ella Leora Brady. Howard worked for many years at the Davis and Symonds Sawmill, where he was referred to as “Shortie.” He retired from the sawmill in 1981 and went to work at the Mount Ascutney Resort as a security officer until his retirement. In September of 1974, Howard and his family moved to Springfield.

Never to be seen without his cigar or a Pepsi, Howard enjoyed camping, playing basketball (most favorite was playing “horse”), taking yearly trips with the kids to Whalen Park, spending time with family and his beloved dogs, Daisy, Tiger and Sandy.

Howard is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ella; his children, Janet Hathcock, Elaine Anderson, Sheila Purington, Dennis (Elva) Currier, Daniel Currier and David (Melody) Currier; 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; a brother, Ken Currier; a sister, Carrie Gonyea; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Brenda; three brothers, Stanley, Raymond and Amos Jr.; and two sisters, Midge and Ruth.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Oakland Cemetery in Springfield. Memorial donations may be made to Adult Day Care, c/o Larry Kraft, Springfield Hospital, Springfield, VT 05156. Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
