Carolyn R. (Watkins) Green, 71


Carolyn R. (Watkins) Green, 71, died Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. She was born She was born June 28, 1944, in Springfield, the daughter of Forrest and Marjorie J. (Short) Watkins. She attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School.

She was employed at Jones & Lamson Machine Tool for 18 years, PCM in Springfield for many years and was a Rutland Herald delivery driver for several years.

She enjoyed crocheting and cake decorating, making many wedding cakes over the years. She attended the Christadelphian Ecclesia in Springfield.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Douglas Green of Springfield; two sons, James A. Green and Kevin D. Green of Springfield; one brother, Glenn Watkins of Springfield; two sisters, Sandra Shute of Springfield and Joanne Warren of Bartonsville; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2016, at the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield. Lawrence Millay will officiate. Arrangements are by Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Alberta Mellen, 85


Alberta “Jo” Mellen, 85, formerly of Ludlow, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Cedar Hill Health Care Center in Windsor.

She was born June 6, 1930, in Cavendish, the daughter of Frank and Ethel (Johnson) Blanchard, and she received her schooling in Proctorsville.

She was employed at the former Fellows Gear Shaper for many years and later at the Green Stamp Store, both in Springfield, and most recently, worked in shipping and receiving at the Woodstock Inn for 13 years until her retirement.

She was known for her cooking and baking, and she enjoyed bingo, having yard and food sales and traveling to Cape Cod.

Survivors include two daughters, Anika Gonzalez of Grantham, N.H., and Terri Putnam of South Yarmouth, Mass.; a grandson; three sisters, Geneva Lampert of Spring, Texas, Elsie Wilder of Ludlow and Lucille Curtis of Springfield; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six brothers, six sisters, three half-brothers and two half-sisters.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, in Hillcrest Cemetery in Cavendish, with the Rev. William Shelden officiating, followed by a reception at the home of her sister, Elsie, in Ludlow. Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. James E. Reynolds Sr., 61



James Earl Reynolds Sr., 61, of Bennington, died April 26, 2016, at Albany Medical Center.

He was born in Rockford, Ill., the son of Arland and Ruth (Hammond) Reynolds.

He graduated from Springfield High School in 1972 and married Judy Grochowik on Aug. 31, 1986.

Survivors include two sons, Vincent Reynolds of Starksboro and James Reynolds Jr. of Houlton, Maine; a daughter, Jennifer Fedelski of Springfield; a brother, Duane Reynolds of Wells River; a sister, Janet Reynolds of Rutland; and six grandchildren. Mr. Reynolds was predeceased by his wife in 2009 and a brother, Jerry Reynolds, in 2004.

Muriel H. Berg, 87


Muriel Hoisington Berg, 87, of Medfield, MA, formerly of Springfield, VT, and Pittsford, VT, passed away Monday, April 25, 2016, at Norwood Hospital. She was the wife of the late Dana A. Berg, and the mother of the late Dana J. Berg.

Born in Springfield, VT, on May 15, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Lillian (Avery) Hoisington. Muriel grew up in Springfield and spent most of her life in the VT/NH area. She was a graduate of Springfield High School and Castleton State College in Vermont.

Muriel taught elementary school for many years, before retiring from the Rutland Town School in 1986. Muriel loved animals, nature and music, playing violin in school and singing for many years in her church choir. In her spare time, she enjoyed being outdoors and reading. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her family.

She is survived by her two grandsons Dana A. Berg II of Rutland, VT, and Erik Berg and his wife, Christine, of Norfolk, MA, and their son, Gabriel. She also leaves behind many, much-loved extended family members.

Gail B. Peay, 79



Gail Beverly Stearns Peay, age 79, of Sandy, Utah, passed away April 25, 2016. She was born July 28, 1936 in Springfield, Vermont to Keith and Ruth Stearns. Gail joined the Church of Latter day Saints in New England on April 6, 1958. She moved to Utah in 1961 to live with friends from her hometown. She married David Peay in the Salt Lake Temple on November 22, 1961.

She was a faithful member of the LDS Church touching the lives of many through her years of faithful service. She loved teaching genealogy. She dearly loved her family and was a great example of love, acceptance and caring to all she came in contact with. She enjoyed her pets and wild animals as well as the outdoors and spending time at the family cabin.

She is survived by her husband; David, son; Rick (Ruth), daughters; Karen (Troy) Egbert, Linda (Rob) Ross and Amy (Michael) Bird, 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grand children as well as her sister Carol (Fred) Bock of Orange, CA and two brothers; Glenn (Barb) Stearns of Keene, NH and Chip (Lynne) Stearns of Springfield, VT and Aunt Dotty Cook of Chester, Vermont. She was preceded in death by her parents, Keith Francis and Ruth Houghton Stearns.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 2, 2016 at 11:00 am at the LDS Crescent 16th Ward, 275 E. 10600 S. in Sandy. A viewing will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at the church and from 9:30-10:45 am on Monday prior to the service. John L. Allen, 81


John L. Allen, 81, of Brockton, Mass. passed away on April 20, at home. He was formerly from Springfield, Vt., the eldest child of Lyndon and Irene (Roys) Allen, and a graduate of Springfield High School and Northeastern University.

A Randolph, Mass. teacher of 30 years, and Korean War veteran, he enjoyed history, movies, theatre, family, friends, and a really good meal.

He is survived by his sister, Maryann (Allen) OMalley; his children, Jennifer Drosos, Geoffrey Allen and Jason Allen-Forrest; his grandchildren, Ashley Walter, Charles Dorsey Jr. and Nicholas Dorsey; and his great-grandchildren, Brendon Hemingway, Aundrea Dorsey and Aiden Dorsey.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 1, at 2 p.m. in the All Saints Episcopal Church, 44 Park Avenue, Whitman. Roger S. Schaefer, 58


Roger S. Schaefer, 58, died Monday, April 18, 2016. He was born February 4, 1958, in Pennsylvania and moved to Springfield with his family in 1964. He grew up in Springfield, attending the school system; after school he worked for the town of Springfield as a truck driver and in the Parks and Recreation Department.
He is survived by two brothers, Gary Schaefer of Kentucky and Mark Schaefer of Springfield. He was predeceased by his parents Ned and June Schaefer and a sister, Dorothy Callison, who lived in Idaho. He is also survived by his stepson, Jeremy Desmarais and his son, Shawn.
Mr. Schaefer was a longtime member of the local Christadelphian Ecclesia.
Davis Memorial Chapel is handling the funeral services. There will be a graveside service later this spring, at a date to be announced.

Dorothy R. Holm, 93


Dorothy R. Holm, 93, formerly of Springfield, Vermont, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Abbey Delray South, in Delray Beach, Florida, on April 18th, 2016.

Dorothy was born and raised in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, and was the last surviving child of the late Harold and Martha Reid.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Holm, and brothers Jack and Vincent “Buddy” Reid.

She will be forever in the hearts of her daughters Pamela Stevens and Patricia Schrey; grandchildren Scott Stevens, Tandi Stevens and Joby Stevens; great-grandchildren Kail Stevens and Cory Stevens; sister-in-law, Christine Reid; as well as nieces and nephews.

Patricia F. Hayden


Patricia F. Hayden, 95, died Sunday April 17, 2016, at her home in Springfield. She was born March 21, 1921, in Springfield, the daughter of Harold C. and Gladys ( Fullam ) Fellows. She graduated from the Mount Herman School in Northfield, and went on to attend the University of Vermont.

On Oct. 2, 1942, she married Albert A. Thorpe. He predeceased her in 1945. She later married Robert B. Hayden on December 29, 1956, He predeceased her on May 23, 1994.

Mrs. Hayden worked for many years with the Springfield Visiting Nurse Association, working in the clothing room and serving of the board of trustees. She worked as a Red Cross nurse’s aide with Springfield Hospital for several years. She worked at the Springfield Library for 16 years, and was a library volunteer for many more years. She volunteered for the Santa Claus Club for 40-plus years.

She is survived by her son, Gerald A. Thorpe of Wilmington, Del., two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

At her request there were no services, and a private burial was held in the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield, Vt. Contributions may be made in her memory to the Springfield Town Library 43 Main St., Springfield, VT 05156; or to the Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Southern Vermont and N.H., P.O. George E. McCormick, 64


George Erving McCormick, 64, died Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was born Oct. 29, 1951, in Neptune, N.J., the son of Monti C. McCormick Sr. and Catherine (Vannote) McCormick. He attended schools in New Jersey and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Neptune City, N.J. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a volunteer fireman in Bradley Beach, N.J., for several years.

Mr. McCormick was employed as a truck driver for many years in New Jersey and most recently with GMH Transportation in Westminster until his retirement in 2014. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his three daughters, Georgia Empey of North Port, Fla., Diane McCormick of Springfield and Georgeann Turner also of Springfield; a brother, Lance McCormick of Fayetteville, N.C.; four sisters, Ethel Phillips, Patricia Post and Esther Sutton, all of New Jersey, and Kristyn McCormick of Arizona; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Monti C. McCormick Jr.; and three daughters, Linda Tarmen, Elizabeth McCormick and Julie McCormick.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2016, at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, with the Rev. George Keeler officiating. Friends may call at the chapel from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday.

Larry Roland Moses, 64, of Chester, died Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at Springfield Hospital with his family by his side.
He was born on July 10, 1951, the son of Janis Putnam Moses and Roland Moses. Mr. Moses was a long time resident of Chester. He spent his life as a farrier, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Judith; his four sons, Carlton, Shawn, Matthew and Heath; a sister, Patricia Phelps; four grandchildren and a cousin. He was predeceased by his parents and a grandson, Tayler Moses.

Alta M. Crary, 92


Alta Marguerite (Hodgkins) Crary, 92, formerly of Springfield, died Monday, April 11, 2016, at Kindred Care Greenbriar nursing home in Nashua, N.H. She was born Aug. 28, 1923, in Keene, N.H., the daughter of Earl and Francese (Clayton) Hodgkins. She graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1941. She married Earl Crary on Nov. 15, 1943, and they lived in the home they had built on Chester Road in Springfield for 57 years. She loved playing with her grandchildren, Christmas, camping, knitting and crocheting, playing cards and baking pies.

Mrs. Crary is survived by two daughters, Janette of Gilbert, Ariz., and Susan of Nashua, N.H.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her sister Marjorie Davis, her brother Francis "Buster" Hodgkins and her husband Earl Crary in 2003.

Everett E. Reed, 99


Everett Ernest Reed of Bellows Falls and Townshend, Vermont, died Sunday, April 10, 2016, at the age of 99. Born in 1916 in Walpole, he was the son of Ernest and Emma Reed. He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Arlene Davenport Reed. Everett graduated from Walpole High School in 1933 and then worked at the Bellows Falls Creamery. He was employed by Jones and Lamson Machine Company in Springfield from 1940 to 1981. After retiring, he enjoyed his second home at Country Village Park in Orange City, Florida. He loved to go square dancing, camping throughout New England and Canada, and caring for his bird feeders and beautiful gardens.

In addition to his wife, Arlene, he is survived by two sons, Alan E. Reed (Jane) of Wallingford, Connecticut and Bruce A. Reed (Joanne) of Hingham, Massachusetts; a sister, Margaret Reed Ross of Walpole and Townshend, Vermont; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, David C. Reed of Wallingford, Connecticut.

Calling hours are held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 15, at Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at St. Charles Church on Saturday, April 16, followed by interment at Walpole Cemetery in Walpole. Brian L. Comstock, 76


Brian L. Comstock, 76, of Rutland, Mass. passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at St. Vincent Hospital after an illness.

He was born in Springfield, VT, the son of Harold and Marion (Clark) Comstock and had lived in Springfield, VT, before moving to Rutland in 1970.

Brian graduated from Springfield High School in 1957. After serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1961 his career focused on computer programming. He worked as a self-employed woodworker for many years and then enjoyed 10 years at Worcester Airport Limousine before retiring five years ago. Brian was an avid golfer, enjoyed classical music, riding roller coasters and loved to spend time with his family.

He leaves his loving wife of 54 years, Carroll S. (Stearns) Comstock; two daughters Sheila M. Comstock of Olean, NY, and Susan M. Comstock of East Longmeadow, MA; three brothers Dale Comstock of West Hartford, CT, Russell Comstock and Stephen Comstock, both of Springfield, VT; two grandchildren Allison and Emily Ingraham; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service for Mr. Comstock will be held at a later date. Please omit flowers. James W. B. Parry, 62


James W.B. Parry, 62, died Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

He was born Aug. 5, 1953, in Springfield, a son of Byron and Rosie (Griswold) Parry. James graduated from Springfield High School and began serving full-time with the Vermont National Guard in Springfield. He received his honorable discharge from the National Guard after 17 years of service and then started Parry’s Sporting Goods in Perkinsville, and worked for a time as a painter and lead man at Power Ray in Claremont. Later Jim operated JP Overhead Door, installing garage doors throughout Vermont and New Hampshire.

Jim was married to Shirley Melendy on May 23, 1987, and together they raised their family. He loved spending time with his family, especially time spent in the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping or time at their land and camp in Sheffield, Vermont. He was particularly close with his mother and father and could often be found puttering on small engine repairs with his dad. When he wasn’t with his family, he enjoyed auctions and riding motorcycles. Jim served his community as a volunteer firefighter with the West Weathersfield Fire Department.

He was predeceased by his mother, Rosie; and his twin sister, Jane Parry. Jim is survived by his wife, Shirley of Perkinsville; his father, Byron, also of Perkinsville; daughters Lynn Towne of Windsor, Jody Freeman of White River Junction, Vermont, Virginia Cutting of Claremont and Frances Short of Westminster; sons Shayne Trombley of White River Junction, Vermont and Jeffrey Parry of California; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; sister Elizabeth Landon of Tennessee; and two nephews.

Kathryn M. Kesek, 86


Kathryn M. Kesek, 86, of Atkinson Street in Bellows Falls, died Thursday, April 7, 2016, at the Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehab Center in Middlebury, Vermont.

Kay was born Nov. 26, 1929, in Weathersfield, the daughter of Elwin J. and Nellie V. (Heald) Spaulding. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1947. Following her marriage to Robert Sherwood in 1953, she moved to Bellows Falls, where she lived the rest of her life. Kay was active in many local organizations such as the Bellows Falls Moose Club, the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. She was honored in 2011 with the Governor's Award for Outstanding Community Service for her work with groups such as RSVP, Women of the Moose, Red Cross Blood Drive and the Bellows Falls Community kitchen. The award was personally presented to her by Gov. Peter Shumlin at the Vermont Statehouse.

Kay married Walter A. Kesek on Dec. 27, 1971. They lived a full and active life together until his death in 1999.

Kay is survived by four sons, Richard Sherwood and wife Harriette of Chester, Walter J. Kesek of Bellows Falls, Mark Kesek of West Swanzey, New Hampshire and David Kesek of Warren, New Hampshire; three daughters, Jean Kuhn and husband, Bryant of Westminster, Lorraine Dotson and husband Stephen of Center Rutland, Vermont and Mary Davis and husband Kenneth of Athens, Vermont; along with 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson, Avery Sherwood; her brother, Irwin Spaulding; her sister, Carrie Guild; and her son, George Kesek.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at Fenton and Hennessy Funeral Home in Bellows Falls. Officiating will be Rev. Hannah K. Rogers. Calling hours will be held from 12 to 2 p.m., with a short prayer service at 1 p.m. by the Women of the Moose. A private burial will take place at a later date. Melvin J. Chahanovich, 83


Melvin J. Chahanovich, 83, of Salem, N.H., passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at Salemhaven, Salem, N.H. Mr. Chahanovich was born and raised in Springfield, Vt., and lived in Salem, N.H., for over 60 years. He served with The US Air Force in The Korean War and before retirement, Mel worked as an applications engineer at Atlantic Research Corp. More recently, he worked for United Liquors of Lawrence. Mel was a member of Salem VFW Lodge # 8546 as well as a member of The D.A.V. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and also loved traveling, dancing, and bowling.

His family members include his devoted wife, Emma D. (Patnaude) Chahanovich of Salem, N.H. He also leaves his son, Robert B. Chahanovich, and his daughter, Jean M. and her husband, Doug Sullivan, and their mother, Rita Chahanovich. Mel has three stepdaughters, Lynn D. Turchi, Debra P. Walsh, and Georgianna Lekas. He also leaves four granddaughters, Rickilee, Courtney, Amanda and Tamara; as well as three great grandchildren, Michael, Jr., Jacob and Raelynn. Mel has a brother, Kenneth and his wife, Patricia Olney; and a sister, Katherine and her husband, Philip; as well as several step-grandchildren; and step-great grandchildren; and his special aunt, Bea; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Michael Chahanovich.

Elizabeth L. Hansen, 83



Elizabeth Longe (Brassord) Hansen, 83, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2016, at the Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. She was born Aug. 20, 1932, in Springfield, the daughter of Nelson and Elva (Garry) Longe. Mrs. Hansen graduated from Springfield High School in 1950 and from Castleton State Teachers College in 1954 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education.

She taught in Brattleboro, Vermont, East Hampton, Hatfield and Amherst, Massachusetts, before coming back to Springfield where she taught for 29 1/2 years, of her nearly 34 years of teaching career at East and Park Street schools.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Windsor County and Vermont Retired Teachers Association and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Betty loved teaching her students and always thought of them as her children, always making learning fun. She loved spending time at the family camp and taking her grandchildren on adventures and instilling in them the love of creativity. She loved painting, birds, cooking, any crafts and photography.

Survivors include her husband John, whom she married April 18, 1987; a son, Jeffrey Brassord and his wife, Darlene; granddaughter Elizabeth and her husband, Jeremy Wesson; grandson Travis Brassord and his wife, Carly; and granddaughter Kate Brassord; great-grandchildren, Rachel and Jaxon Wesson and Ben Brassord and Devante Brassord. She was predeceased by her parents, Nelson and Elva Longe; and brother, Watson Longe and his wife, Donna.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, at the Davis Memorial Chapel. Reverend Gerry Piper, Pastor of the United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.

Phillip R. Raney Sr., 78


Phillip Richard Raney Sr., 78, of Newport, died Sunday, April 3, 2016, at the VAMC in White River Junction, Vermont. He was born July 14, 1937, in Keene, the son of Clarence T. and Lena (Dutilley) Raney. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School.

He was a former member of the Moose Lodge of Claremont and was an avid fisherman. Phillip worked for First National Store in Claremont for 23 years as the produce manager and clerk and later worked for Grand Union, which became Shaw’s, in Springfield for 16 years and retiring in 2002.

The family includes three children, Phillip R. Raney Jr. of Hartland, Jody Lynn Raney of Claremont and Dana A. Raney of Claremont; many grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence T. Raney and Albert Raney; and three sisters, Pauline Mack, Mardaret Skullettey and Mildred Raney.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at St. Mary Cemetery with Father George Majka officiating. Barbara S. Gammon, 81



Barbara S. Gammon 81, died Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Springfield Hospital. She was born July 11, 1934, in Newfane, the daughter of Archer and Violet (Harris) Sawtelle. She graduated from Chester High School, class of 1952, and attended the University of Vermont. On Feb. 12, 1955, in Proctorsville, she married Robert K. Gammon. He predeceased her April 21, 1995. Barbara was employed at Chester Drug in Chester for 50 years, retiring in 1997.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Springfield, a member of the R.S.V.P. in Springfield and enjoyed cooking and crocheting blankets and other items for several charities over the years. She also enjoyed playing cribbage at the Springfield Senior Center and taking trips with the Senior Center.

She is survived by one son, Robert W. Gammon, of Grafton, N.H.; two daughters, Beth Gammon of Springfield, and Dawn Wright of Westminster Station; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Alva Sawtelle of Del Rio, Texas; one sister, Jackie Plumb of Andover; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Amy Horton; and one brother, Lyle Sawtelle.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 11, at United Methodist Church in Springfield. The Rev. Gerry Piper, pastor, will officiate. A private family burial will take place in Hillcrest Cemetery in Proctorsville later in the day.
