Ruth Harvie


Ruth H. Harvie October 07,2016 Ruth Hyde Harvie, 87, died Monday, Oct. 3, 2016, at the Kendal at Hanover retirement community.

She was born Nov. 20, 1928, in Troy, New York, the daughter of Ruth Hyde and Peter Lyons Harvie. She graduated from Emma Willard School, Russell Sage College and received her master’s degree from Paterson State College.

She taught high school English in New Jersey and at Green Mountain Union High School in Chester, Vermont.

Ms. Harvie was a board member of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and played cornet with the Mad Bavarian Band and the Grafton Cornet Band.

She served as a Windsor County state senator for the 1995-96 session.

She enjoyed tennis, community theatre, antique collecting, gardening and traveling. She visited 97 countries.

Survivors include a daughter, Heidi Webster of Norwich; three sons Harvie Porter of Randolph, Walter Porter of Brentwood, New Hampshire, and Jeb Porter of Belmont; stepchildren Leigh Garoni of Hackensack, New Jersey, and Christine Petrizzo of Fort Myers, Florida.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Diana Maher of Rio de Janerio.

She was predeceased by a sister, Harriet Seymour, and brother, Peter Harvie.

A memorial service with reception to follow will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2016, at Norwich Congregational Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Grafton Cornet Band, P.O.
