Edward Kolenda, 93, passed away on June 14th at the Springfield Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Claremont, NH, on Sept. 8, 1922, to Charles and Felicia (Horodecki) Kolenda. During the depression in 1932 the family returned to Poland, where he received his education. During the war, he joined the Polish Army under the command of General Wladyslaw Anders, and they joined the British Eighth Army to form the Polish II Corps. The Anders Army eventually ended up in Italy, fighting alongside the British troops at Monte Cassino. When Edward joined the Polish Army, he lost his American citizenship and had to have it reinstated before returning to Claremont. He waited a whole year before the proper document (a baptismal record from St. Mary’s in Claremont) was accepted.
Edward married Jennie Janowski on April 23, 1955.
Edward was employed at Joy Manufacturing Co. in Claremont and General Electric in Ludlow and Rutland as an inspector for 32 years, where he was commended upon retirement for his loyalty and contribution to the company. Edward was an avid gardener and enjoyed raising glads to provide for the church as well as sharing his vegetables.
Edward leaves his wife, Jennie; two sons Victor (Cindy), Peter (Linda); two daughters Maria (Kent) and Charlene; three grandsons Steven, Nicholas and Ryder; and a sister, Helen Pawinski of Valparaiso, IN. His parents predeceased him as well as three brothers Frank, Dominic and Domat.
