Suzanne J. Foster



Suzanne J. Foster, 76, passed away Sunday morning. July 30, 2017. at her home in Baltimore, Vermont. She was born Aug. 3, 1940, in West Rutland, Vermont, the daughter of Marvin and Delia (Pelkey) Noyes.

She was employed at Price Chopper, and NewsBank in Chester, Vermont.

She enjoyed yard sales, crocheting, looking up recipes and watching cooking shows. She loved to spend time with her family and was very proud of her four granddaughters. She also loved and enjoyed her cats.

She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Delbert E. Foster Sr.; her son, George Bargfrede Jr. and his wife Lorraine of Baltimore, Vermont; granddaughters Janel Palmeri and her husband Travis of Perkinsville, Larissa Bargfrede of Springfield, Candace Bargfrede of Springfield, and Marcia Herman of North Carolina; one brother,Wendall Noyes of Enterprise, Alabama, one sister, Betty Klein and her husband John of Baltimore, Vermont; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; brother Robert Noyes; sisters Reba Hearne and Barbara Smith; and her daughter, Pamela Herman.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, Vermont, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Wayne L. Burke



Wayne L. Burke, 83, died Sunday, July 30, 2017, at Springfield Health and Rehab Center.

He was born Aug. 2, 1933, in Springfield, the son of Sydney P. and Beatrice E. (Putnam) Burke.

He graduated in 1953 from Springfield High School.

Mr. Burke served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 10 years.

While in school, he worked at the First National Store. After his military service, he was employed at J&L for 26 years, and then went on to work for the Springfield School system and Readex. He enjoyed gardening and baseball.

Survivors include a brother, Lyle, of Charlotte, North Carolina, many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Burke was predeceased by nine siblings, Blanche Lorinovich, Patricia Nelson, Colleen Fisk, Norman, Edward, Warren, Richard, Robert and Ruth Burke. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at the funeral home with the Rev. Gerry Piper officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Springfield.

Theresa M. Emery


Theresa M. “Terri” Emery, 90, died peacefully on Sunday, July 30, 2017, at the Mt. Ascutney Health Care Center in Windsor, VT, following a short illness. She was born December 10, 1926, in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Archibald and Anne (Larabelle) Webster. She grew up in Detroit where she attended Catholic school and graduated from St. Henry Catholic High School. On November 25, 1951, she married Richard R. “Bob” Emery in Detroit, MI.

Having lived in the city until age 34, she then made several moves around the US with her husband and two children before settling in the rural outskirts of Springfield, VT, in 1970. She was a kind, loving, and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and a second mom to many nieces, nephews and friends of her children. Terri loved the Lord and was a faithful parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Terri enjoyed going out dancing with her husband, raising her family, playing cards and board games, reading, traveling, sewing, cooking, and baking. She also enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and Hallmark movies, and trying to get lost with family or friends on scenic car rides. She cared for her live-in mother for many years until her death in 1974. Kind-hearted and interested in the well-being of others, Terri kept her wit, sense of humor, love of fun, and concern for her loved ones throughout her life. She was a good friend to many and loved by all who knew her.

In addition to raising her family, she worked as a Key Punch Operator, as a ticket agent at the Hartness State Airport in North Springfield, VT, with the Visiting Nurse Association, as a Clerk at Ames Dept. Store in Springfield, and later in life helped out on the Young’s Milky Way Farm in Springfield.

She is survived by her daughter Janice Young and her husband Ken of Springfield, son Rick Emery and his wife Ramona of Springfield, 5 grandchildren: Julie MacGlaflin (Jason), Kenny Young (Kelli), Ricky Emery, Catherine Emery, and Kyla Emery. 2 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and close friend and “adopted sister” Alice Young, mother of her son-in-law Ken. Terri was predeceased by her husband Bob on April 9, 1996, and by her siblings Jarrod, Margaret, and Marie.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield, VT. Reverend Peter Williams will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Springfield.

Kay Faust



Naomi "Kay" Hurwitz Faust, of Baltimore, Vermont, passed unexpectedly on Friday, July 21, 2017. Kay was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on April 21, 1943. The daughter of Fania and Philip Hurwitz, Kay spent the first 21 years of her life in South Africa. She attended the University of South Africa where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Shortly after leaving college, Kay moved to London, England. Her early time in Europe included a stay in Paris. During her time in England, she worked as a children's librarian in the public library system. She made many dear friends in England. She was an avid traveler and, in her late husband Bob's words, "was sort of a bohemian."

In 1981, Kay participated in a job exchange, moving to Baltimore, Vermont, for a year to work at the Springfield Town Library. During that year, she met Bob Faust, who would end up moving to London with Kay after her job exchange was over. They were married in 1984 in London. In 1985, their son, David, was born and in 1988, they all moved back to Baltimore, Vermont. The rest, to use a cliché, is history.

Kay was predeceased by her husband, Bob. She is survived by her son, David Faust, of Middlebury, Vermont; her sisters, Rena Ellman, of Kibbutz Yasser in Israel, and Shirley Ancer, of Johannesburg; her brother, Arthur Hurwitz, of Johannesburg; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and friends.

Kay was an active community member. She loved to travel the world. She loved her family and many friends. Kay was Jewish, and she valued and celebrated her heritage. She loved to play Scrabble and traveled all over to play in tournaments. She was a kind and loving wife and mother, as well as a beloved relative and friend to many. She will be deeply missed.

There will be a celebration of life on Aug. 6 at the Weathersfield Center Church from 2-6 p.m.

Lona I. Proctor



Lona I. Proctor, 85, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. She was born Nov. 4, 1931, in Springfield, Vermont, the daughter of Floyd and Daisy (Glynn) Partridge. She attended Springfield schools, graduating from Springfield High School Class of 1949.

On May 9, 1952, she married Earl Proctor in Springfield, Vermont. He predeceased her in 1988.

She loved to play bingo, play cards, do puzzles and a little gambling. She loved being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: they were the shining light in her life. Every summer the family would go to Seymour Lake for vacation, where she enjoyed fishing. She loved to teach her grandchildren at Christmas time how to bake and decorate Christmas cookies, her grandchildren still do this on Christmas Eve every year.

She is survived by one son, Floyd “Butch” Proctor and his wife, Laurie, of Rutland, Vermont; three daughters, Lonna Farrar and her husband, Steve, of Fairhaven, Vermont, Lynn Cram and her husband, Eric, of Weathersfield, and Loreen Billings and her husband, Edgar, of Baltimore, Vermont; one sister, Betty Lou Roy and her husband, Russell, of Weathersfield; sister-in-law Lucy Abare; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Earl; and one brother, Lloyd Partridge.

A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Margaret P. Carson



Margaret P. Carson 60, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday July 18, 2017 at her home in Springfield, VT. She was born September 27, 1956 in Bridgeport, Connecticut the daughter of Maryann Carson. She attended schools in Bridgeport, graduating from Harding High School.

She was employed as a Pharmacy Technician at Gabriel's Pharmacy in Bridgeport, CT. for several years before moving to Vermont where she worked for area Pharmacy's. She loved animals, loved her cats Sully Sullivan and Romeo.

She is survived by her sister Mary Rosa of Newfane, VT. Niece Jennifer Lynn Rosa, Nephews - Sonny Rosa and his wife Tammy, and Nicholas Rosa. Great nieces and nephews – Gabriel Rosa, Amber Classey, Grace L. Rosa, Ruby A. Rosa, and Mason W. Rosa. Great Aunt and Uncle Wayne and Lena Carson, cousins, David, Richard and Kathy. And also by close friends Susan and Pumpkin Jones. A family memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

Mary Ellen Ankuda



Mary Ellen Ankuda, 82, of Charlestown, N.H., passed away Monday evening, July 17, 2017, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. She was born Nov. 19, 1934, in Weathersfield, the daughter of James F. and Doris A. (Parker) Mahoney. She attended Springfield schools, graduating from Springfield High School Class of 1952. She later earned an associate’s degree from CCV.

She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at National Survey in Chester, Vermont, Springfield Hospital and the law office of Fred Glover in Ludlow, Vermont, as well as several other small businesses in the area. She also taught typing and shorthand at the Community College of Vermont.

She enjoyed playing cribbage, crossword puzzles and introducing herself to new people. In her earlier years, she played on the Fellows Gear Shaper softball team with her sister and her father was the coach.

She is survived by four sons, Patrick M. Ankuda and his wife, Deborah, of Springfield, Vermont, Paul J. Ankuda of Boston, Massachusetts, Mark E. Ankuda of Springfield, Vermont and James A. Ankuda and his wife, Gemma, of Maple Shade, New Jersey; one sister, Kathryn “Kay” Predom and her husband, Frank, of Ludlow, Vermont; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; also by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and close friends,Yvonne Nadeau and Herb and Deb Monroe.

She was predeceased by her parents, James and Doris Mahoney.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, Vermont.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, at St. Catherine’s Church in Charlestown. Rev. John Loughnane will officiate.

Burial will be at the Plain Cemetery in Perkinsville at a later date.

Raymond M. Hatt



Raymond Marshall Hatt, 77, died Monday, July 10, 2017, at Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

He was born Aug. 14, 1939, in Auburndale, Massachusetts, the son of Alfred N. and Eda M. (Robinson) Hatt.

After graduating high school, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1960.

Mr. Hatt worked as a machinist at Jones & Lamson Machine Tool Co., Bryant Grinder Co. and Fellows Gear Shaper, all in Springfield.

Survivors include three daughters, Maureen Patoine, of Biddeford, Maine, Deborah Sayer, of Arundel, Maine, and Heather Hatt, of West Palm Beach, Florida; three grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; a sister, Barbara Dube, of Amsden; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four siblings, Gretchen Wheeler, Howard, Kenneth "Pete" and Robert Hatt.

A private graveside gathering will be in Aug. 26 in Oakland Cemetery in Springfield.

Carol J. Kangas



Carol J. Kangas, 72, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully July 9, 2017, at her home with her beloved “Ron” Yarish, with whom she lived and enjoyed the loving home they built together more than 25 years ago.

Carol was loved by all that knew her; her natural beauty and elegant style, positive, caring and gentle, and kind spirit was lifting to all. Her energy was endless and infections.

Carol and her beloved Ron enjoyed their home and created a lovely sanctuary of flowers, lush lawns and peaceful perfection for themselves and the birds.

Carol enjoyed gardening, antiquing, reading Danielle Steel novels, walking, biking and days at the beach. She was soft, warm, positive, caring and a True Angel.

In Carol’s final months, she chose solitude at her home with Sweet Ron and Deanna, but was truly grateful to her family, friends and neighbor’s for all of prayers, calls, cards, letters, pictures and flowers and all of the kindness and love, she felt it all.

Carol was born Jan. 12, 194,5 and a 1964 graduate of Springfield High School and attended college in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Carol worked at Parks and Wilson in Springfield for 35 years as an executive secretary and after its closing, Carol went to work with Jane Bixby at Trails End Accommodations in Ludlow, where she was adored by all of her clients for her detailed professionalism and her kind and caring way.

She is survived by her beloved Ron Yarish and his three children, Heidi Yarish-Coburn of Campton, New Hampshire, Paige (Heather) Wolfe of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Collier Yarish, of Sebastian, Florida and three grandchildren.

Siblings Dolores Eastman and William Eastman, both of Springfield, Linda Rutter of Lima, Ohio and Richard Eastman of Springfield and adoring spouses and nieces and nephews.

And her niece Deanna Carroll, who will forever miss her. And Deanna’s husband Chris and son T.J. of Rockingham.

She was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Norma Eastman of Springfield; and a long ago love, Robert “Bobby” Armstrong.

And Ron and Deanna want to give special thanks to VNA- Hospice and the entire staff of doctor, nurses and caregivers for walking us through the in-home care and support with all of Carol’s needs. With special thanks to Beth.

Helen E. Andrews



Helen E. Andrews, 96, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Springfield Health and Rehab Center following a short bout with cancer. She was born June 5, 1921, in Hillsboro, New Hampshire, the daughter of Paul S. and Harriett M. (Reed) Scruton. She attended Hillsboro schools, graduating from Hillsboro High School Class of 1939.

On Nov. 27, 1943. she married Louis Andrews in Hillsboro, New Hampshire.

Along with her family, she moved to Bellows Falls, in 1951 where she and her husband owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store. She and the family moved to Springfield, Vermont, in 1956 where she worked hard at raising four children, working for Springfield Hospital in several capacities and being a secretary to Dr. Roger Revelle for 14 years.

Upon retirement she and her husband were volunteers at Springfield Hospital for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband Louis (after 69 years of marriage); a son, Lance; and daughter Susan.

She is survived by sons Peter and David; as well as five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Davis Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Wilfred J. Sheehan



Wilfred J. “Will” Sheehan, 92, of Brattleboro, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, July 4, 2017, at the Holton Home, where he had been a resident since 2012.

Mr. Sheehan was born Oct. 21, 1924, in Clinton, Massachusetts, the son of John J. and Leona (Lashua) Marine Sheehan. He was raised and educated in Springfield, Vermont graduating from Springfield High School. While in high school he became a journeyman machinist, which later led to a full-time position with the former Fellows Gear Shaper Co. in Springfield.

A proud veteran of World War II, he served his country in the United States Navy stationed in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operation that included the island of Saipan.

Following his honorable discharge from active service he returned home to attend the University of Vermont, graduating from UVM in 1953. After college he worked for Jones & Lamson in Springfield for two years.

In 1955 he took a position with the USDA Soil Conservation Service working ten years in St. Johnsbury, and ten years in Randolph before moving to Brattleboro in 1976, working out of the Brattleboro office. He retired in 1986 following 30 years of faithful service with the Government. He spent the summer of 1961 in Alaska, one of his more memorable assignments.

A devout Catholic, Mr. Sheehan was a communicant of Saint Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Brattleboro.

With his wife he loved square dancing and was a member of the Green Mountain Squares for 25 years holding several offices within the club. He was also active with the Windham County Chapter of AARP and the American Red Cross Blood bank in Brattleboro.

Of his other leisure time activities, he enjoyed spending time at his hunting camp in Newbury, Vermont with family and friends. He loved to hunt and was a member of the St. Johnsbury Rifle & Pistol Shooting Club.

On Dec. 27, 1969, in Randolph, Vermont, he was married to Joyce Gray Shepard, who predeceased him on March 16, 2013.

Survivors include one sister, Eileen Sandstrom of Littleton, Colorado; four stepdaughters, Judith Jacobson of West Barnstable, Massachusetts, Jane Howe of Tunbridge, Vermont, Sylvia Cooley of Leverett, Massachusetts and Sharon Sault of Randolph, Vermont.

Additionally he leaves seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by four siblings.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Brattleboro, Vermont. Burial will be at Saint Michael’s Parish Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home the same morning of the Mass from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.

Thomas A. Fairbanks



Thomas A. Fairbanks, 63, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2017 at the Springfield Hospital in Springfield, Vermont.

He was born July 10, 1953 in Springfield, Vermont the son of Charles Sr. and Frances (Kozel) Fairbanks. He attended Springfield Schools and graduated from Springfield High School.

On Sept. 27, 1980, he married Dolores Vigneault in Claremont, New Hampshire.

Tom was employed as a machinist with the Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield for 25 years, Chase the Mover in Claremont, New Hampshire for many years, and worked in the logging business for his brother Charles Fairbanks Jr.

He enjoyed sports and played sports in high school. He also played for the All State Teams in high school. Tom loved being outdoors, he enjoyed walking, running, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed watching sports.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dolores Fairbanks, one son Anthony Fairbanks of Springfield, one brother Charles Fairbanks Jr. of Springfield, three sisters – Susan Fog of Springfield, Sara Fairbanks of Adrian, Michigan, and Sandra Fairbanks of Miami, Florida. Also by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield, Vermont. Rev. Gerry Piper will officiate.

Richard M. Hitchcock



Richard M. Hitchcock, 86, of Springfield, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 3, 2017, at Springfield Hospital. He was born July 20,1930, in Springfield, Vermont, the son of Ivan and Blanche (Butterfield) Hitchcock. He attended Springfield schools, graduating from Springfield High School and the Co-Op Program in 1949.

Richard served in the United States Army National Guard Company D from 1950 to 1953, during the Korean War.

On July 17, 1954 he married Nancy Spaulding in Springfield, Vermont.

He was employed in the pattern shop at Jones & Lamson Machine Tool Company for a short time before starting his 32-year career as head of the survey division of Dufresne-Henry Engineering in North Springfield, Vermont. He enjoyed all aspects of woodworking. He owned and operated Sign Crafter for 25 years creating hand-carved wooden signs.

Richard had an inventive mind. He looked at the world with a unique perspective, an attribute he passed along to his children.

He was an active lifetime member of the Springfield United Methodist Church. He was a youth leader for many years and held a variety of offices within the church. He made the wooden sign for the church. Richard loved to talk about the Bible and share his faith with others.

He is survived by his wife Nancy of North Springfield; three daughters, Patricia Doherty and her husband, Gerard, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, JoAnn Grey of Wichita Falls, Texas and Margaret Hitchcock-Steger and her husband, Kurt, of Brooklyn, New York; six grandchildren, William Doherty, Eliza Kennedy, Timothy Doherty, Matthew Grey, Stephanie Gorham and Whitney Philippi; five great-grandchildren, Allison Doherty, Kaitlyn, Greyson, Lily and Sally Gorham; as well as many nieces, nephews and their spouses.

Richard was predeceased by his parents; brothers Raymond and Robert Hitchcock; sister Priscilla Connor; nephew Raymond Jr.; and son-in-law Stephen Grey.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 20, at the United Methodist Church in Springfield, Vermont. Pastor Gerry Piper will officiate. A private family burial will be held a later date.
