Mary E. Williams



Mary E. Williams, 94, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, at her home in Springfield.

She was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Cavendish, the daughter of Kenneth and Mabel (McCavney) Williams.

She graduated in 1940 from Springfield High School and in 1944 from the University of Vermont with a B.A. in accounting.

Ms. Williams served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Storekeeper Third Class at the Navy Supply Center in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

She was employed by the U.S. Foreign Service for 26 years at American Embassies in Morocco, Cuba, Canada, India and Belgium. She helped process Cuban refugees in Coral Gables, Florida, after Castro overthrew Batista. She also worked at the State Department in Washington, D.C., and Boston, Massachusetts.

She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star and VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include two cousins, Ruth Green, of Charlotte, and Willis Spaulding, of Essex Junction; Suzanne Schuffert, her primary caregiver, of Scotia, New York, and other caregivers.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, with the Rev. Jean O'Bresky, pastor of First Congregational Church UCC in Springfield, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery in Springfield.
