Salvadore "Sal" Joseph Garofano, 81, of Springfield, died Saturday at Genesis Health Care Center in Lebanon, New Hampsire, after a long illness. He was born April 26, 1935, in Rutland, the son of Albert F. and Sarah M. (Romano) Garofano. He graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in Rutland.where he was an all-star football player.
In his younger years, he worked for his family in the dry cleaning business. He later owned and operated Sal's Carpet Cleaners for many years in Springfield.
He volunteered with David's House, Listen Community Services and other organizations in the area.
He was a member of the Springfield Elks BPOE 1560 and the Loyal Order of Moose No. 679 in Springfield.
Survivors include a son, Michael Garofano of Westminster, Massachusetts; a sister, Therese Burton of Springfield; a niece and two grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Springfield. The Rev. Peter Williams, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will take place at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Memorial contributions may be made to the Millard Dutton Fund, c/o Springfield Fire Department, 77 Hartness Ave., Springfield, VT 05156. Arrangements are by Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
