Melvin J. Chahanovich, 83, of Salem, N.H., passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at Salemhaven, Salem, N.H. Mr. Chahanovich was born and raised in Springfield, Vt., and lived in Salem, N.H., for over 60 years. He served with The US Air Force in The Korean War and before retirement, Mel worked as an applications engineer at Atlantic Research Corp. More recently, he worked for United Liquors of Lawrence. Mel was a member of Salem VFW Lodge # 8546 as well as a member of The D.A.V. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and also loved traveling, dancing, and bowling.
His family members include his devoted wife, Emma D. (Patnaude) Chahanovich of Salem, N.H. He also leaves his son, Robert B. Chahanovich, and his daughter, Jean M. and her husband, Doug Sullivan, and their mother, Rita Chahanovich. Mel has three stepdaughters, Lynn D. Turchi, Debra P. Walsh, and Georgianna Lekas. He also leaves four granddaughters, Rickilee, Courtney, Amanda and Tamara; as well as three great grandchildren, Michael, Jr., Jacob and Raelynn. Mel has a brother, Kenneth and his wife, Patricia Olney; and a sister, Katherine and her husband, Philip; as well as several step-grandchildren; and step-great grandchildren; and his special aunt, Bea; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Michael Chahanovich.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Saturday, April 9, 2016, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at The Goundrey & Dewhirst Funeral Home, 42 Main Street, Salem, NH.
